Mahagauri Mata is the eighth incarnation of Mata Durga. The eighth day of the holy festival of Navratri is dedicated to Mahagauri Mata. The nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped every day during the nine days of Navratri. Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of Navratri is considered important because many people open their fast on this day and as the symbol of worship of nine forms of Maa Durga perform Kanya Puja (worshiping girls below the age of 9 years). Appearance of maa mahagauri
As suggested by the name Mahagauri, the appearance of Mata is extremely white/fair. She dresses in white clothes. That is why she has been called Shwetambardhara. The vehicle used by Mata is a white coloured Taurus (Bull).
The right-hand upper hand is in Abhaya Mudra (pose that dispels fear) while the lower hand is holding a trident (trishul). In the top left hand, Mata holds a damru (small hand drum) and in the lower hand is in the blessing posture. Thw entire posture of Mahagauri is very calm. Worshiping Mahagauri Mata is beneficial and all sins are also destroyed by it. Supernatural attainments are also attained by her grace.

Grieved by the death of Mata Sati, Lord Shiva went into deep meditation and penance. For many years Lord Shiva stayed away from worldly affairs. For the fulfilment of prophecy that demon Tarakasura will be killed by son of Lord Shiva, Sage Narada approached Maa Parvati and told her about her previous birth as Mata Sati. He asked Maa Parvati to do penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Mata Parvati did hard penance for thousands of years remaining foodless, waterless and in open which made her body black covered with dust, soil, leaves, etc. Pleased with the austerity of the Maa Parvati, Mahadev accepted Parvati Mata. Maa Parvati washed her dusty form with Ganga water flowing out through the hair of Mahadev. After which the goddess became extremely radiant fair like electricity and since then was named Mahagauri. Mahagauri Mata has an affectionate, calm, and soft aura.
How to worship mahagauri mata at home?
First of all, take clean bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. Then place the idol or picture of Mahagauri on a white cloth covered wooden post or in the temple. Put a flower on picture or idol of Mata and light a lamp. Apply Roli (vermilion)-kumkum (Masculine) to Mata. Offer incense, perfume, flowers, betasha, paan, betel nut, clove pair, bangles, etc. to Mata. Meditate on the Mata while reciting her Mantra with a white flower in hand. Recite Durga Chalisa and perform the Aarti of Mata with incense and lamp.
Offering coconut, pudding (Halwa of suji-semolina) and black gram to the mother on the eighth day of Navratri as bhog. After offering bhog distribute it in Prasad form. After Aarti, in Navratri, young girls called Kanjak are worshiped on the day of Durgashtami and Navami. In this Kanya Puja, girls up to 9 years of age are worshiped. It is believed that these girls are the form of Goddess Durga. Coconut Pudding and black gram along with Dakshina is given after worshiping the girls.
