According to the legend, in the previous birth, Maa Brahmacharini was born as a daughter of the Himalayas. With Narad Muni’s guidance, she performed austerities to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Due to this hard penance, she was named as Maa Tapashcharini or Maa Brahmacharini. Maa Brahmacharini spent one thousand years eating fruits and flowers and for a hundred years lived on the land by eating the herbs. After this, the Maa kept, a hard fast and tolerated the rain and sun under the open sky, eating only the broken bilva patra (bel leaves), and worshiping Mahadev.
Even after all these efforts when Lord Shiva did not appear before her, Maa Brahmacharini gave up eating dry Bel Patras and continued austerities for several thousand years, waterless and foodless. Because of her huge sacrifice of leaving food she got the name Aparna. Maa Brahmacharini became very weak due to hard penance. The gods, sages, all described Maa Brahmacharini’s penance as an unprecedented virtuous act, praised and said, O Goddess, no one has done such rigorous penance till date. This was possible only by you. Your wish will be fulfilled, and you will receive Shiv Ji as your husband. Now leave penance and return home.
