Most people nowadays are unable to follow all the recommended procedures that were followed by our ancestors. The Grah Pravesh day thus looks a bit different than it used to. The morning starts with homeowners rushing to move their furniture and belongings into the new house, followed by home decoration and cleaning.
Most families place the idol of their deity in the newly allocated place of worship and perform Aarti, while praying for the success and well-being of their family. Pandit ji is called for Grah Pravesh Puja and Homam, which typically takes places during the evening. Some friends and relatives and called for the Puja, which is then followed by Prasad distribution, food, and celebrations for the new home. Gifts are accepted by the homeowners from their friends and colleagues who wish them luck with their new place.
Traditionally, you would tie a bandanavaar of paan leaves on the doorway of your home and set up the urn on the first day of your new house. At the house’s main gate, the sister or daughter of the head of the house would tie the bandanavar of flowers, paan leaves, or mango leaves made with her own hands. This is followed by making Rangoli near the entry.
After completing Dwar (Main Gate) Pravesh Puja, one would enter the new house in the sunlight with Mangal Kalash. At the time of entering the new house, the house owners would enter the new house with five mangikal items coconut, yellow turmeric, jaggery, rice, milk with them. Lord Ganesha is then worshipped with Arti and Katha. Worship would start by making a swastika on a kalash and near the place of worship.
The idol of Lord Ganesha, the clockwise conch, Sri yantra, will be taken to the house on the day of entry to keep the grace of Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. This is done with the belief that the house would always be full of money and any defects will be removed.
This would be followed by Puja and Homam performed by Pandit Ji. Havan is done to remove doshas and to seek blessings from God. All the family members sit around the Havan Kund, and the priest recites holy mantras.
After Grah Pravesh Puja, the kitchen is first worshiped. The gas stove is turned on after worshiping, and a swastika is made with rice and Kumkum. After that, some prasad is made and fed first to God and then distributed amongst the family members. Brahman Bhoj would be arranged for 11 Brahmans and Donations would be made to the needy.
