Lord Ganesha is the most honoured and worshipped deity in the Hindu religion. Lord Ganesha is the ‘Pratham Pujniya’ among Hindu people. Lord Ganesha is known by many names like Ganapati, Gajanana, Vinayaka, Vighnaharta.
Lord Ganesh is younger son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. The most popular ancient legend in respect of birth of Lord Ganesha is that Goddess Parvati made Ganesha from sandalwood paste and asked little Ganesha to guard the door while she was bathing. Once when Goddess Parvati was taking bath, Lord Shiva came and wanted to enter the premises but Ganesha did not allowed him to enter. Being denied to enter in his own house made Lord Shiva angry and in his rage Lord Shiva raised his Trishul and with it severed the head of Ganesha.
This incident infuriated Mata Parvati and Lord Shiva had to promise to gift his life back to Ganesha in order to calm the anger of Maa Parvati. Shiv Ji then ordered his followers (Ganas) to bring the head of first living being. The followers saw a baby elephant and took its head, bringing it back to lord Shiva who then joined the head of the baby elephant with the remaining body of Ganesha. Lord Ganesha thus came to be known as ‘Gajanan’ which means the one with head of elephant.
Lord Ganesha has two wives Mata Riddhi and Mata Sidhi and his two sons are Shubh and Labh. Ganesh Ji rides on mouse, which is his chosen vehicle. Modak and ladoos are most liked by Lord Ganesha.
