Sage Bhrigu was appointed to select the most suitable of the Gods to who dedicate the rituals. He first went to the King of Gods, Devraj Indra. Devraj Indra failed to acknowledge Sages Bhrigu’s presence as he was busy enjoying the dance of apsaras (Nymphs) in heaven. Sage Bhrigu, in rage, cursed Devraj Indra that he would be called an egoistic soul all over the creation.
Sage Bhrigu next went Braham Lok to visit Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma was busy chanting the Vedas, doing meditation, creating the world, and spending his time with Mata Saraswati, his consort, with his four heads. Sage Bhrigu cursed Lord Brahma that he would not be worshipped anymore by the living beings on earth. Next, he went to Mount Kailash to meet Lord Shiva. Here again, Sage Bhrigu found Lord Shiva busy in his Rudra Dhyanam with his consort, Mata Parvati, at his feet, so he cursed Lord Shiva that he would be worshipped only in the form of Lingam.
At last, Sage Bhrigu went to Vaikuntha, the adobe of Lord Vishnu. There Sage Bhrigu found Lord Vishnu was sleeping on the bed of Shesha Nag. When Sage Bhrigu arrived, he first saw Lord Vishnu’s feet and felt too humiliated. Enraged, Sage Bhrigu kicked Lord Vishnu on his chest and thus awakened Lord Vishnu. To pacify the sage Bhrigu, Lord Vishnu grabbed the feet of the Sage and started pressing them gently. While pressing the feet, Lord Vishnu poked the eye on the feet of the Sage, due to which the ego of the Sage ended. Rishi apologized for his mistake and ordered the Sages to dedicate the rituals to Lord Vishnu.
Due to the absence from their heavenly adobe of Lord Vishnu – the sustainer of the world and Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, the whole creation became gloomy. Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma seeing this took the form of a cow and a calf, respectively and came to the Chola kingdom. A cowherd grazed this cow and calf daily on the Seshachalam hills of Chola kingdom.
The cow daily used to roam away from the remaining herd and used to pour her milk into the anthill to satisfy the hunger and thirst of Lord Vishnu every day. Due to this, the cow was unable to give milk in the evening for the people. The shepherd felt something suspicious is there. The next day the cowherd took the herd for grazing, and like every day, the cow left the herd and approached the anthill and poured milk into it.
The cowherd saw this act, and in his anger, threw an axe on the cow. Lord Vishnu, in order to protect the cow and calf, arose from the anthill and the axe hit him on his forehead. An enraged by this act of the cowherd Lord Vishnu cursed him to die immediately, and as a result of this curse, the cowherd died. This news reached the king.
The Chola king became aware of the absence of the cowherd. He went to the grazing field in search of the cowherd and found the dead body of the shepherd and nearby found the cow was giving milk to Lord Vishnu. Thewchola king couldn’t recognize him. Hence, with his arrows, the king tried to kill the cow and the calf, stating that it’s not serving the kingdom; instead, it’s wasting the milk by pouring in the anthill.
Lord Vishnu again emerged and grew enormous, stopped the arrows from traveling further, and in rage, he cursed the king that the king will be born as a demon in his next birth. On recognizing the Lord, the Chola king asked for Lord’s forgiveness for his mistake and surrendered at the Lord’s feet. The king realized his mistake, unlike the cowherd. Lord Vishnu was pleased and gave him a boon that he, Lord Vishnu, would marry his daughter in his next birth as King Aakasaha. The curse will end when Lord Vishnu is presented the crown by King Aakasaha during Vishnu’s marriage with his daughter.
In his next birth, Lord Vishnu was born as Lord Srinivasa to a woman named Vakula Devi. It is said that Lord Krishna, in Dwapar Yuga, gave Mata Yashoda a boon that he will take birth as her son in Kal Yuga. Vakula Devi was the reincarnation of Mata Yashoda. The Chola king, in his next birth as King Aakasaha, didn’t have any children. Then, one day, he found a baby girl on the lotus flower in the fields; he named her Padmavati.
One day Lord Srinivasa, who was a forest dweller, was on a hunting spree and was chasing an elephant. But the elephant entered a garden where Devi Padmavati was with her friends. Elephant threatened all; Srinivasa saved everyone there in the garden. Lord Srinivasa was enchanted by the beauty of Padmavati and enquired about her.
He told his mother, Vakula Devi, that he would not be calmed until and unless he marries Padmavati as it is a prophecy based on his boon to Chola king. When Lord Srinivasa expressed his desire to marry Padmavati, Padmavati’s father refused, calling her a pauper (not having Lakshmi beside him), and conditioned that the marriage would be allowed only if Lord Srinivasa organizes a huge grand marriage ceremony and Padmavati is given expensive gifts.
Thus Lord Srinivasa had no option but to take a huge loan from Lord Kuber, the God of wealth, for marriage expenses. Therefore, Lord Kubera gave a mountain of gold to Lord Srinivasa as promised. Lord Srinivasa told Lord Kubera that at the end of Kali Yuga, he would repay his debt. The expenses of marriage were so great that to this day, the devotees of Tirupati are filling Lord Venkateswara’s vault.
The Lord Venkateswara stayed on the hills of Tirumala following the marriage, and a magnificent temple rose in the place. Since then, it is believed that the Lord is repaying the loan received by him from Kuber in bits and pieces. It is said that to help the Lord make his payments in a timely manner, the devotees make their contributions in the form of donations.
One of the most famous Hindu deities is Lord Venkateswara of Tirupati. Lord Venkateswara, also known by various other names, is an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. Lord Venkateswara is also called by the names- Balaji, Srinivasa, and Govinda. It is believed that Lord Vishnu is on the earth as Lord Venkateswara appeared on earth for the upliftment and the salvation of human beings in the Kalyug.
Lord Venkateswara is the presiding Deity of Venkateswara Temple located in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India. This temple is considered one of the richest temple in India. It is believed that the Tirumala hill is a part of Mount Meru that Garuda brought on the earth. And the seven hills signify the seven heads of the cosmic serpent or Adi sheesh nag. All around the year, millions of people reach the hills of Tirumala to seek the blessings of God. Devotees believe that Lord Venkateswara resides in Temple at Tirupati with his wife, Padmavati.
“Venkateswara” is formed by the combination of the words “Venkata,” which is the name of a hill in Andhra Pradesh, and “Isvara” means “Lord.” Therefore, “Venkateswara” means “Lord of Venkata. The Brahmanda and Bhavishyottara Puranas interpret the word “Venkata” as “destroyer of sins,” deriving from the word ‘vem’ (sins) in the Sanskrit and “kata” as the power of immunity.
Another interpretation is that the word “ven” means keeps away, and “kata” means troubles. So the two words, when combined, form Venkata and their combined meaning is ‘who keeps away troubles’ or ‘who takes away problems.’ Lord Venkateswara is known to be the only God who took birth to save the people from troubles in Kalyuga.
It is believed that Lord Venkateswara will reside on earth till the end of Kalyuga. At the end of Kalyuga, Lord Vishnu’s other incarnation, Lord Kalki, will take birth and destroy everything on earth. This would happen when sins will reach their peak, and there will be no humanity left. That would be the end of Kalyuga, and Lord Kalki will destroy everything, and the formation of the new Yuga will occur.
Lord Venkateswara is also known as a very powerful God. It is said that if a devotee asks for anything with a sincere heart, God fulfills all his wishes. After being blessed by the fulfillment of their wishes by God, people come here to show gratitude and homage by donations in the form of hair, money, etc. It is believed that Balaji of Tirupati return ten times what we offer.
It is believed that the idol of Lord Venkateswara is Swayambhu or Self Manifest. The Lord’s idol is richly adorned with flowing locks of hair, and some of these locks of curly hair fall on his shoulders. The nose is neither prominent nor flat. The mouth of the Lord’s idol is also elegantly shaped. The chin and the ears are carved beautifully. The ears are adorned with beautiful ear ornaments. The Lord’s chest is magnificent in the cuts.
The body posture is of a lion and exquisitely shaped. The belly is also beautifully modeled. The Lord’s idol has four arms, the upper two being carved to hold the chakra and the conch; the conch and the chakra do not form the integral parts of the idol. The upper right arm of the idol holds the Sudarshana Chakra; the upper left arm holds the conch of Lord Vishnu, which he blows in times of war. The lower right hand of the Lord’s idol is in the Blessing posture. While the lower left hand is bent a Little at the elbow and rests on the upper part of the waist).
The left hand’s fingers rest on the left thigh, with the hand’s thumb almost parallel to the waistline. While the idol’s body below the waist is slightly tilted to the left, and the knee are bent and open slightly outwards, giving the idol peculiar grace and charm. Mata Lakshmi is carved on the right chest of the Lord in the sitting pose. The yagnopavitam and four necklaces or ornaments of the neck are clearly seen on the idol. There are armlets on arms. There is, however, a waistband and this waistband is about 2 inches thick. The feet and legs of the Lord are shaped beautifully. Both the knees are bent and open slightly outwards, giving the stately figure charm and grace. The feet are models of perfection and have ornaments near the anklets. The Lord’s image has on the shoulders marks resembling ‘scars made by the constant wearing of the bow and a pack of arrows.
Under this, devotees dedicate their hair to the Lord, which means that the devotees dedicate their hair most beloved adornment to God. The story behind it is like this – Lord Balaji lost some of his hair in an unexpected mishap during his regime on earth. Neela Devi, a Gandharva Princess, noticed it and cut a portion of her glorious hairs. She offered her hairs humbly to the Deity and requested him to plant them on his head.
Pleased with her devotion, God accepted the offering of the princess and promised that whoever visits his shrine and donates his/her hair at his feet will be blessed. Since then, it has been a custom among devotees to shave the hairs of their heads before or after their desires are fulfilled.
