According to the legend when the terror of the demons started increasing, Mother Durga incarnated in the form of Mata Chandraghanta. At that time, the king of the Asuras (demons) was Mahishasura who was in war with the Devtas. Mahishasura wanted to win over the throne of Dev Raj Indra. He had a strong desire to rule the heaven. All the gods then appeared before Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh to find a solution to this problem. All three Gods the Trimurti got angry listening to the plea of devtas.
From the energy that came from the mouth of the three due to anger descended a goddess. This goddess came to be know as Maa Chandraghanta. Lord Shankar gave his trident and Lord Vishnu provided his chakra to Maa. Similarly, other Gods and Goddesses also handed over their weapons in the hands of Mata. Devraj Indra gave the goddess a bell. Surya gave his glow, sword, and provided lion for the ride. After this, Maa Chandraghanta approached Mahishasura. Seeing this form of Mata, Mahishasura realized that his end has come. Mahishasura attacked Mata and thus began an intense war. Alongside this, a fierce war broke out between the gods and the demons. Finally, Mata Chandraghanta killed Mahishasura thus helping the gods.
