We got the naming ceremony done for our newborn at Live Online Puja. Panditji first advised us about the auspicious first alphabet for our Son’s name based on his Birth Chart, along with providing us information such as the Nakshatra, Rashi, Dashas, etc. of his life. An elaborate Namkaran ceremony & puja ritual was then conducted online on the date advised by Panditji which was performed online in the name of our baby. We feel extremely thankful & blessed to have experienced all this.

Namkaran where “Naam” means ‘Name’ and “Karan” means ‘to create’ is the naming ceremony of a baby. Namkaran is the 5th Sanskara (ritual) of the 16 Hindu Sanskaras which are used to name the different stages of a person’s life from his Conception to Cremation.
Namkaran is one of the most important Hindu Ritual. It is a joyous occasion held after the birth of a child in the presence of family and friends to select name of the newborn while following traditional methods and astrological rules. This occasion has religious significance as well as legal and social importance.
Namkaran or naming ceremony is held 11 Days after the birth immediately preceding the ‘sutika’ (when mother and child are confined to intensive post Natal care). Parents often choose Namkaran ceremony to be performed on a different day (after the 10th day) based on the advice of their Pandit Ji. This date must be after the 10th day of the child being born and before its first birthday. Namkaran is the day on which a newborn is given a name and an identity. Religious rituals are performed during the Namkaran online ceremony for the sake of child’s good health as well as a long and a prosperous life.
Naamkaran Sanskar is generally performed at home however it may also be celebrated on a large scale with a large family and friends gathering in a party hall or pandal.
As written in our Shastras, the name of a child and its meaning makes an impact on his character and shapes his destiny. Every time a person is referred to by that name, it makes the impact stronger. It is also believed that the name of the child if not in sync with the planetary positions may bring bad luck. As such selection of a right name for the baby is important.
The Birth star or Janam Nakshatra, the moon sign, as well as the planetary position at the time of birth are taken into account for selecting the starting letter of the name. Name of the deity presiding over the month of birth as well as that of an ancestor are often taken into account while choosing the name for a new-born. The team at Live Online Puja can perform a Namkaran online ceremony for your new-born with all the Vedic Rituals.
There are five general principles also for choosing the name of the child or ‘Namkaran’, these include:
At times, the child is given the name of a grandparent or an ancestor. Book the Namkaran Online and get best recommendations for the name of your child.
According to some numerological beliefs, the name of a boy should have an even number of Sanskrit letters (2, 4, 6, and 8) and name of the girl should have an odd number of letters (3, 5, 7, and 9). While a name with 11 letters in it is considered auspicious for both boys and girls. These numbers vary based on the birth star and planetary positions of the new-born child and these must be taken into consideration before finalized a name for the baby. Naamkaran ceremony is a traditional Hindu ritual, but its celebrations vary across different regions and communities. A Pandit Ji performs the Namkaran Sanskar on the auspicious day and time of the naming ceremony. The rituals are started by the mother and father with a prayer and a Hawan is conducted. Prayers and mantras are chanted by Pandit Ji, for the well-being and long life of the newborn. Pandit Ji guides the mother and father in offering their prayers to the Gods, their Ancestors & to the five elements (Agni – The Fire, Dharti – The Earth, Aakash – Sky, Jal – The Water and Vayu – The Air).
As per some rituals, the Name of the new-born is whispered in the right ear of the baby thrice by father or grandfather or paternal aunt or by any other relative. After this, the name is officially announced for the first time to all the relatives and friends, and thus begin the celebrations. Pandit Ji often makes a horoscope for the baby and grants suggestions for the baby’s long and healthy life ahead. Parents of the child thereafter take blessings of the elders in the family. Family members, relatives and friends shower the new-born with gifts such as silk clothes, gold ornaments, silver coins, money etc. Some family members & friends offer their blessings in the form of gifts including prams, cribs, bathtubs, blankets, winter wear, clothes, toys, etc.
In certain regions, the Namkaran is followed by a cradle ceremony in which the newborn child is placed in a decorated cradle as a part of a ritual. While in others, ear piercing ceremony is performed after the Naamkaran ceremony. On the spot where the child’s ear is to be pierced, a dot is made using vermilion in the ear-piercing ceremony and a person skilled in ear piercing like goldsmith or a doctor is called to pierce the baby’s ear. The pierced ears of the baby are then inserted with the gold earrings given by maternal grandparents.
The Naamkaran ceremony ends with a feast. As per Hindu rituals, the food is first offered to ancestors and then to the priest who had performed the rituals after which the family and friends join the feast.
